941 Geary SF Group Show 8/13/11

941 Geary is pleased to present The City We Love, a large-scale group exhibition of works from artists living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. The show is co-curated by Justin Giarla and local graffiti practitioner APEX, and features new work from artists actively engaged in San Francisco’s graffiti and street art culture. The opening reception is on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 6-9 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through September 3.

Justin and APEX came together to organize this exhibition, with the shared motivation of wanting to show what’s going on right here, right now. The resulting exhibition is a modest sampling of what’s happening in the streets and studios of San Francisco, including work by locals APEX, Casey Gray, Chad Hasegawa, Chor Boogie, David Ball, D Young V, EZRA, Hugh Leeman, John Felix Arnold, Luke Todd, NEON, Siloette, Teen Witch and Vogue.  With backgrounds as diverse as their respective artistic styles, the collection of works featured by this group of artists are as entrenched in conversation with each other in the gallery space as they are in the streets. 941 Geary’s expansive space serves as an ideal backdrop to the work: bold, graphic, daring, surprising and as unique as the city itself.

From the curators:

“I just felt that it was time to focus on doing a show with just San Francisco artists, there’s a stronger community in San Francisco than people realize. The artists that we work with are here because they love it, they could easily make it in Los Angeles or New York, but they (just like us) choose to be here.” – Justin Giarla

“There are always lots of (San Francisco-based) artists that get picked up and taken out of the city, you know, to play on the international street art scene. But this is the place they call home, and just from a street art perspective – we’re getting some locals together to see just what’s happening here in our streets, right now. It just seemed like something we need to do.”  -APEX

Guy Denning at Brooklynite

Guy Denning
September 8 - 25
Opening Night: Sept. 8th, 6-9PM
New York City

Brooklynite & FB Gallery
368 Broadway, NYC
BrooklyniteGallery.com
____________________________

On the heels of his highly successful "Inferno" exhibition in Italy earlier this year, Guy Denning presents the second of his three part series of oil paintings on Dante's Commedia in New York City for the aptly titled exhibition, "Purgatorio".

Originally drawing inspiration from Dante's writings, Guy's intention has not been to recreate the poem in a visual or literal sense, but instead let it act as a framework for his own personal interpretation.  As with the writing of Shakespeare, Guy finds a perpetual relevance in Dante's work where the specifics of name, situation and place are easily adapted to the modern world; as if time moves on but the problems of humanity remain essentially the same.

The events of September 11th and the emotional toll it took on the American individual is final and and critical element to this body of work. Guy suggests that the suffering of America is too often defined by the media in terms of the political rather than the personal, leaving the individual voice of ordinary people sometimes unspoken in the narrative of history. His work sets out to make a small and personal amendment to that omission.  Poignantly enough, this exhibition will be held in a NYC 'Pop-Up' location just blocks from Ground Zero and on the 10 Year Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The work, though tied to Dante’s writing will also feature elements of images found on the internet, particularly of people in New York City on that terrible day. Significant press images are also used as reference for Guy's work in hopes that they will be scrutinized that much more intensely than the photos we glance at far too quickly in newsprint.  He has also constructed one large landscape painting, in the fashion of the traditional ‘history’ genre, made from connected canvas panels. This oil painting, derived from studying still frame images from amateur video footage, aims to create an assumed and complete narrative of the major elements of the day from a New York perspective.

Guy states that this is a collection of work recognizing the suffering of the American people on September 11th and immediately thereafter - when the United States had the sympathy of the world.  He wants it to be viewed as nothing short of respectful to the memories of all those that died and suffered as a result – both in New York and beyond. Guy quotes another English artist William Blake who wrote “Can I see another's woe, and not be in sorrow, too? Can I see another's grief, and not seek for kind relief?” Despite the many cultural differences of the peoples of the world we are all essentially united by our humanity; our common desires, hopes and despairs. It is the ordinary people's common humanity that will take us forward and not politically inspired violence.

Dalek aka James Marshall at SHow & Tell

Running:
RUNNING JUL 22 - AUG 31, 2011
Opening:
Friday July 22 2011 7-11pm
Show & Tell Gallery is pleased to announce a two person exhibition featuring the work of acclaimed American artists James Marshall & Greg Lamarche.

Exhibiting these distinct artists together creates a powerful dynamism based on the collision of James Marshall's graphic geometries with Greg Lamarche's typographic savvy and cut-paper collage technique. The cross-pollination of visual and conceptual traits that occurs when viewing both bodies of work at once produces a new, combined aesthetic that is wholly unlike either Marshall or Lamarche's artistic achievements on their own. That said, it would be an oversight to discount the similar visual and structural methodologies upon which these artists have built their practices.

The works on display, with their robust colours and sinuous lines, are a testament to the leading position Marshall and Lamarche occupy at the frontier of the new abstraction. The current impulse back towards abstracted forms and the spectral buzz of cleverly combined colours is brought to fruition by these artists. What Balance candidly demonstrates is that Marshall and Lamarche are successfully recalibrating the relationship between figure and abstraction without losing the primacy and critical content of their work.

My Man Jose Parla presents Character Gestures

September 9 - October 22, 2011

OHWOW
937 N. La Cienega Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90069
Los Angeles, CA - OHWOW is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by José Parlá, titled Character Gestures, open September 9th through October 22nd, 2011. Comprised of paintings, mono-transfers and installations, this exhibition builds on the artist's earlier work that dealt with the concept of psychogeography and depicted distressed architectural surfaces layered with calligraphic text. While he continues to broach the idea of how we experience urban landscapes and the visual language of mark making, the shift within Character Gestures stems from a deeper engagement with process and abstraction.

The notion of "character" is as much about text, integrity, and specific traits, as it is a literal nod to Parlá's performance, wherein he assumes the role of hypothetical pedestrians who interact with marred city walls, as he creates the work. "Gesture," encompasses the ideas of movement, communication, and demonstration, and is mutually respectful of the artist's accidental and calculated actions when applying medium to surface.

With Parlá's new paintings, as seen in No Return, Here Again, 2011, marks mix with textures, bright colors, and media, yet the process is as involved and significant as the visual outcome. Additionally, a large-scale installation fills the central gallery space - the freestanding sculptural translation of classroom memories opens a conversation with the surrounding paintings. In a collection of work on paper, which Parlá refers to as "mono-transfers," he experiments with a form of frottage, documenting his new paintings via the impressions they leave on paper.

Character Gestures exemplifies Parlá's deftness at technical execution; the complexity of layering, combined with erasure, still manages a translucent effect. His fluency in visual communication is mindful of the fact that any emotion or memory that attempts physicality can only serve, in reality, as an abbreviation of its original essence. He mitigates this condition through his poetic and individualized form of aesthetic dialogue, while navigating the art historic doctrine of Abstraction.

José Parlá studied fine arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, and The New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. His work has appeared in exhibitions in London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sydney and Paris. Character Gestures is his first solo exhibition at OHWOW, and a catalogue will be published in conjunction with the show. Parlá's monograph, Walls, Diaries, and Paintings (2011), was published by Hatje Cantz for the occasion of his solo exhibition at Bryce Wolkowitz gallery in New York. Parlá currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

YOUR AD HERE X V1 GALLERY X SHEPARD FAIREY

V1 GALLERY COPENHAGEN PROUDLY PRESENTS

YOUR AD HERE
A SOLO EXHIBITION BY SHEPARD FAIREY
RECEPTION: FRIDAY AUGUST 5. 2011. TIME: 17.00-22.00
EXHIBITION DATES: AUGUST 6. - SEPTEMBER 3. 2011
"Your Ad Here", recent works by Shepard Fairey, comprises a broad array of mixed media works on canvas and paper, as well as screen prints, retired stencils, and Rubylith cuts. Building upon Fairey's history of questioning the control of public space and public discourse, much of the art in "Your Ad Here" examines advertising and salesmanship as tools of propaganda and influence. One series in "Your Ad Here" portrays politicians like Reagan and Nixon as insincere salesmen wielding simple slogans that represent their true agendas when stripped of verbose demagoguery. Another series of works are paintings of Fairey's Obey "Icon Face" in various urban settings usually reserved for advertising as the primary visual. These works showcase the power of images in the public space, and encourage the viewer to think of public space as more than a one-way dialogue with advertising, but as a venue for creative response. "Your Ad Here" means exactly that… not just THEIR ad here, but you can put YOUR ad here. Additionally, these cityscape paintings contextualize Fairey's street art as an element integrated in an intentional composition. Some of the works in "Your Ad Here", such as a group of retired spray-paint stencils demonstrate the simple and direct methods of art application that Fairey has used both in the street, and in his studio practice. All of the works in "Your Ad Here" whether they relate to advertising, politics, or music culture, celebrate art as a powerful tool of direct engagement and empowerment.

Ryan McGinley

Ryan McGinley

Looks like another banger from OW-WOW
GROUP EXHIBITION
Post 9-11
June 30 - August 27, 2011
937 N. La Cienega / Los Angeles / CA / 90069

Opening Reception: Thursday, June 30, 6 – 9 PM

Post 9-11, a group exhibition distinct of a decade and definitive of an era. The work of the nine artists represented (Dan Colen, Terence Koh, Hanna Liden, Nate Lowman, Adam McEwen, Ryan McGinley, Agathe Snow, Dash Snow, and Aaron Young) sidestep categorization into a particular movement or style; yet speak to a distinct history through their highly individual, visual dialogue, which includes painting, photography, sculpture, and installation.

Operating in a new millennium, as friends, collaborators, and New York City artists, their relationships with each other cemented fully over the last ten years – a decade spent sharing ideas, studios, apartments, and themselves. This intimate connection not only informed their practice, it influenced their creative progression. Their union provides affirmation that synthesis is a stronger route than fracture, as each artist has now fleshed out their own voice and their own vision, due in part to their bond.

Creating imagery, which at times expressed a shared, youthful freedom, also responds to their experience of these ten years; work that ranges from defiant, irreverent, destructive, to sublime, utopian, and emotive. For example, a two-dimensional piece by Dan Colen, Blop!, 2011, fabricated from tar and feathers adhered to canvas, appears chaotic and abject. It references both the barbaric and archaic act of social punishment, while also interjecting concepts of materiality, and the visual effects of using unorthodox media in painting. Conversely, in its sublimity, Ryan McGinley’s photograph Tom (Golden Tunnel), 2010, is a surreal and cinematically arranged image of a nude, male figure in a train tunnel. It is as transcendent in its ethereal treatment as it is existential in its choreography and open-ended narrative.

These brief examples articulate that as a whole, the work in this exhibition is effective in its ability to translate the myriad reactions possible in light of a connected reality. No two experiences can be exact in their expression, however, their aesthetic approaches, although disparate, present a visual memoir of a notable era. Reluctant in yielding to definition, yet decidedly American, Post 9-11 presents an epitome of a creative group, and characterizes the mood and complexities of this decade.
